NEW CONTEST!!! For Authors!

A few weeks ago or maybe a month or two ago I did a spontaneous photo shoot for my friend Victoria Schwab whose book will come out sometime next year called The Near Witch.

This was the result of it:

Lexie2

Now the fun thing about that for me was that she sent me a little tease I went out and shot something that related to it. It was a fun experiment of sorts for both me and Victoria and since I love doing character based shoots I thought I want to do it again.

I've done a few so far and I really enjoy them!

Ridley

Warmth

So here's the contest:

**Tell me your book Title, your genre, your character (girl, boy, animal?, both?). Basically gimme that "tease" I can go off and shoot on.

For every tweet, shoutout, person you bring here and follow me you get +1 Entry!
If you blog about me, my blog, or my contest you get +5 Entries!

Entries DEADLINE: March 5th(ish) I might extend it!
Open to: At Least Agented Authors.

The winner will not only get this shoot done but will also get a digital file to use for themselves.

Keep in mind I am somewhat limited on what I can do. No aliens, please!
Also, if you want to keep the teasers secret from the world feel free to email them to me at vandsmedia[at]gmail.com

  5. I'm here because of Steph Bowe as well. Wait, I am Steph Bowe... never mind.

Everyone must be emailing you their entries, but I'm going to share my teaser here!

Title: I'm working on it with my publisher. Formerly it was These Bones.

Genre: Contemporary YA. Kind of a love story, but not quite romance. Quirky and funny and sad.

    Teasers (I have two!):
#1 The male protagonist compulsively steals garden gnomes from people's front yards.
#2 The novel begins with a girl saving a boy from drowning in a lake.

(This book is being pubbed September this year in Australia, Summer 2011 by Egmont USA in North America. My agent is Ginger Clark of Curtis Brown.)

    And
+1 for referring Sarah, +1 for referring Sara!
    +1 I tweeted here: http://twitter.com/stephbowe/status/9372833697

There will probably be so many entries I have no chance, but this is a fantastic competition anyway, Vania! Awesome idea :)

    Title: KATANA
    Genre: Paranormal YA
Teaser: A secret past, a forgotten love, and an unbelievably large toaster...

Seventeen year-old Rileigh Martin wanted to spend her summer hanging out with friends, shopping, and working at a hair salon...too bad fighting ninja is a full time job in itself.

My agent is Chris Richman of the Upstart Crow Literary Agency.

If selected, I would like to have the following scene from my book "The Canticle Kingdom."

A young girl in old fashioned pajamas (It takes place during WWII) lifting the lid of a music box with an astonished look on her face. Near her is the wrapping papper and the box she got the music box in.

    Thanks!

    1. My book is called SEA, it's out June 10 it's a romantic/literary/adventure
    2. Teaser: Snap shot of a blonde girl on the back of a motor scooter clutching onto a sweaty black-t-shirt wearing boy would be very thematically true to the story. AND AWESOME.
Otherwise anything water themed. Waves. Kissing.
    3. I will RT this and bring people to you.

  14. Oooh, excellent contest!

My second book 'Shadows of Myth and Legend' will be releasing Spring 2010.

    Genre: dark, paranormal, poetry

Each lyrical tale was inspired by folklore, myth and legend.

A dark depiction of any fae folk would be fabulous.

    Tweeting now!

  15. Eep! This is so cool. You know I love your photos and your trailers!

    1. I was refered by one of your tweets.
    2. My book is THE DARK DIVINE published by Egmont USA in December 2009
    3. YA Paranormal Romance
    4. Grace is a pastor's daughter who has a tendancy to get in over her head and an inability to keep promises.
Daniel is her former best friend who disapeared three years ago and then suddenly showed up in Grace's art class one day.
And even though her brother warns her to stay away, Grace can't deny her attraction to Daniel. But the closer she gets to him, the more actions stir an ancient evil, and she may lose her soul in the process of trying to save the ones she loves.

I'm thinking something with a Grace and Daniel in an alcove or cool alley looking like they're about to kiss. Or something with the two of them near a statue of of an angel. Actually, pretty much any scenario with the two of them together would be awesome.

I'll mention this on my blog tomorrow, and I'll be sure to tweet it. I'll come back with links.

  17. P.S. As for photos: Dark-haired girl in an elaborate green ballgown. Boy in tattered black clothes, his face covered with a scarf/handkerchief/etc. Dripping, abandoned tunnels. Bloody knives. Men in red cloaks. An empty marshland. Snapshots of a very clean white city.

    Hope that helps. :)

LOSING FAITH is a contemporary YA, coming from Simon Pulse, Sept. 2010.

Teaser - Once Brie is over the initial shock of her sister Faith's death, she encounters more questions than closure. She soon uncovers Faith's role in a dark and twisted religious cult...a cult that now wants Brie for a member.

As for photo thoughts - could be of Brie finding a scribbly-looking cross logo almost anywhere. Or on a cliff edge with arms spread wide.

Thanks Vania - love this contest!

  19. Oooooh! Amazing contest.

I tweeted about it and blogged here: http://www.karenkincy.com/?p=1071

    Which was X-posted here: http://karenkincy.livejournal.com/39736.html

As for my book, it's a YA urban fantasy titled OTHER, published by Flux on July 1, 2010. It's a murder mystery where the paranormal people in a small Washington town are getting killed, and it's up to a pooka shapeshifter girl to catch the killer before she's next. Though I think you already knew that. ;)

As for the teaser, I'm thinking of a scene where Gwen and Tavian (a Japanese fox spirit) are at a state fair while being stalked by the killer as well as a werewolf; glowing eyes; a "blackberry sky seeded with stars," as the scene says. I can send you the passage should I have the good fortune to win.

A Sandman falls in love with a mortal whose sleep he controls. Imagine an immortal boy waiting outside the window of a girl as she prepares to go to bed, longing to come in and seduce her to sleep...

My book INVINCIBLE SUMMER is coming out Spring 2011 with Simon Pulse. Chase is a boy, anywhere between 14-18 over the course of the story. He's blond, boyish, and spends all his time on the beach. Not the hunky lifeguard type! More of a dreamer. Big family.

    This is an awesome contest!

CLOCKWISE(chick lit YA)is about 15yr old Casey(female)a time traveler who accidently takes the cutest boy in the school back in time to the nineteenth century.

She's tall and wiry with a mass of curly hair, and unconvince that she is worthy of the popular boy's love. (Nate, a senior football star).

  25. This is an AWESOME contest! My book has been out on submission for two weeks, so I could really use this if (when!) it gets picked up by an editor. And I love the press pack, I will totally get some of those.

    I blogged about the contest (+5) :
    http://freckle-head.blogspot.com/2010/02/awesome-contest-for-authors.html

And posted on my Facebook (+1)

My book CANARY is a Young Adult:

Kate Franklin’s dad is good at coaching basketball; what he isn’t good at is communicating with Kate and her brother Brett. When her mother dies, he shuts down, throwing himself into basketball as a way to cope with his grief, leaving Kate alone in silence. When he lands a job at Beacon, Kate finds it easy to fit in because after all, she's the coach's daughter. She quickly learns to overlook the perks given to the athletes who openly disgrace her brother for not being one of them. However, the players take their power too far Kate must decide whether to stay silent or expose the corruption, destroying her father’s career and bringing down a town’s heroes.

  26. Oh...I forgot to post pictures ideas for my tease of CANARY.

    I'd say:
*A canary (the metaphor has to do with the canaries going down in a mine to make sure the miners wouldn't die, so maybe one that is dirty with a black soot or coal dust), or a canary trapped in a gritty cage
*Prep school stuff (I'm picturing a striped tie, suit, brick gothic looking buildings, something to give off that idea of prestige and entitlement)
    *Basketball stuff

  28. Love these gorgeous photos- The Elevensies are all atwitter with your contest
    and I can see why!

My debut YA is coming out in February 2011 from Delacorte is a romantic fantasy

Warped is about 17 year old Tessa Brody who discovers a dusty old tapestry of a unicorn. When she accidentally pulls a silver thread from the tapestry she releases the young nobleman who has been trapped inside for 500 years...

  31. I'm here because of Maurissa Guibord (who is AH-mazing, BTW).

My YA, SKIN & BONES, is coming out by Dutton spring/summer 2010. It's a dark, paranormal urban fantasy based on Dia de los Muertos and my own sick and twisted brain. I dub it, "Latina Buffy ala Quantum Leap." (*Please* don't tell me you're too young to know what that is...!) ;-)

Now your mission -- should you accept it -- is to capture a character image of Consuela Bones...with or without skin!

Sixteen-year old Consuela Bones discovers that she can remove her skin, revealing a lustrous mother-of-pearl skeleton. Slipping into a parallel world known as the Flow, she can craft skins out of anything – air, water, feathers, fire – compelled to save ordinary people from dying before their time.

Shouts outs on Twitter (dawnmetcalf) & on LJ.

P.S. If I win, and if this character is too hard, there are other visually-stunning characters in this book!

  32. Stunning photos and great contest. Sent by Elevensies. I blogged the contest at http://frankswildyrs.blogspot.com/

SOMETHING LIKE HOPE, YA, to be published by Delacorte in March, 2011.

Seventeen year old Shavonne is locked up in a large juvenile detention center hundreds of miles from home. Amidst shadows from her past, corrupt guards, and out of control girls, she must fight for a redemption she's not sure she deserves. A good visual scene would include her crazy roommate, Cinda, braiding Shavonne's hair on the floor of their spare cell/dorm room.
